The Quiet
Weight
of Wings

“She did not rise all at once. She unfolded, slowly.
Like a letter never meant to be sent.”

A seventeen-year-old girl. A dead mother. A garden full of secrets. And letters — written to loneliness, to the wind, to whatever shows up loudest in the heart.

The Quiet Weight of Wings by Mike Bassett

“Some wounds don’t scab. They seed.” — a story of grief, letters, and the quiet moments that change everything.

A girl. A garden.
Letters that write back.

When seventeen-year-old Grace Harper loses her mother, she expects silence. What she doesn’t expect is to discover that silence has something to say.

After her mother’s death, Grace is drowning in a house full of people who don’t know how to grieve out loud. Her father works longer hours. Her brother plays guitar at low volume. And Grace writes — not stories, not poetry. Just letters. To loneliness. To the wind. To whatever shows up loudest in her heart.

Then something unexpected happens: the letters start writing back. A mysterious notebook appears on her dresser. A record with no label plays her dead mother’s voice. A carved stone in the garden bears a name no one in the family will explain. And in the margins of a library book, a stranger has left a single sentence that feels like it was written just for her.

The Quiet Weight of Wings is a beautifully lyrical debut novel about grief, identity, and the extraordinary power of words to hold people together — even across loss, even across time. For anyone who has ever written a letter they were afraid to send, or held grief they didn’t know how to name — this book understands you.

From the Pages

Letters Grace never sent

Grace’s story unfolds through letters — to loneliness, to herself, to people she may never meet. Here are three that stayed.

Letter I

“Dear Loneliness, you are the loudest thing in this house. Please go away. Or learn to hum.”

— Grace, age 12

Letter II

“Dear Mom, the garden misses you. But I think it’s learning how to bloom without instructions. I think I am too.”

— Grace, unsent

Letter III

“You are not the silence people expected. You are the echo of every woman who refused to disappear.”

— Grace, to herself

At Its Heart

Three threads that run
through every page

01

Grief & Becoming

Grace doesn’t just survive her mother’s death. She unravels because of it — and slowly, painfully, weaves herself back together. Not the same. Better.

02

The Power of Letters

Every truth Grace can’t say out loud, she writes down. And the act of writing — to loneliness, to strangers, to the dead — becomes the thing that saves her.

03

Community & Roots

What starts as one girl’s private grief becomes a garden that spans decades and continents — proof that no one who tells their truth is ever truly alone.

Mike Bassett

About the Author

Mike Bassett

Mike Bassett is a debut novelist and chemical engineer who divides his time between Omaha, Nebraska, and Thailand with his wife Jennifer. By trade he is a problem solver — but this book was a different kind of problem to work through.

Drawing from personal loss and quiet resilience, Mike writes fiction that explores identity, legacy, and the thin spaces between sorrow and grace. His prose is lyrical without being overwrought, emotional without being sentimental.

Writing is where I explore the questions that engineering can’t answer — the messy, beautiful complexity of the human heart.

— Mike Bassett

Dedication

“To my Mom, affectionately known as ‘Dude’ to all — even her grandchildren called her Grandma Dude. Thank you for helping me become me. I wish you were still here… miss you every day.”
